TIME: 3:00PM - 3:45PM EST
LOCATION: Your personal computer!
COST: Free
RSVP: Email malderfer@cfsi.org by 7/25/2010

Moderated by Bill Webb, CFSI Executive Director, the program will feature Chief Glenn Gaines, Acting Administrator of the United States Fire Administration. Following the departure of Chief Kelvin Cochran as Fire Administrator, Deputy United States Fire Administrator Glenn Gaines was asked to assume the leadership of the USFA in an acting capacity. During the webinar, Gaines will discuss the ongoing mission of USFA and the priorities he will address in the months ahead. The webinar will provide opportunities for our listeners to ask questions and learn more about a number of USFA programs to protect Americans against fire and other threats.

To register for this webinar please email malderfer@cfsi.org.

Established in 1989 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy institute, CFSI is designed to educate members of Congress about the needs and challenges of our nation's fire and emergency services so that the federal government provides the types of training and funding needed by our first responders.

For CFSI, success is built around education. In an effort to better educate Congress about the needs of the fire service, and to keep the fire service informed on activities in our nation's capital, we are proud to offer the CFSI Webinar Series. Each month CFSI hosts a webinar featuring members of Congress, Congressional staff, federal officials, or fire service leaders discussing the pertinent national issues affecting the fire and emergency services.

Update on Chief Boswell, Ret. Past President FCAM

Hobie is progressing real good. He is only going to therapy once a week now where they work on his right arm but that is coming along so good that they are about ready to quit that.. We are going to the gym 3 days a week where he does his walking, is on the tread mill for a few minutes, and then he works on the other machines to build his arm and leg muscles. He does come home pretty tired after that but is happy to do it too. Hobie did get OK'd to drive and has driven a couple of times but really hasn't pushed the issue which is good. Next Friday, July 23rd, Hobie is scheduled to have a full knee replacement. He is in so much pain now, so he is looking forward to the surgery as have heard from so many people that they felt so much better afterwards. We are hoping for the same results. Hobie will be in the hospital over the weekend and then probably go back to Tabitha Rehab for more therapy before coming home again.
Hope all is going well for everyone... Stay cool...
Till later... Nelda

NFPA Issues Warning on Antifreeze in Residential Fire Sprinklers
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has issued a safety alert recommending that residential fire sprinkler systems containing antifreeze should be drained and the antifreeze replaced with water. The alert follows a research study and an initial set of fire tests conducted after a fire incident raised concerns. The incident involved a grease fire in a kitchen where a sprinkler with a high concentration of antifreeze deployed. The fire resulted in a single fatality and serious injury to another person. Read more about this on the NFPA website.

Seeking IAFC Members to Run for ICC Board of Directors
With the imminent departure of the only two fire service members on the board of directors of the International Code Council (ICC)—Chief Adolf Zubia, past president, and Fire Marshal Barbara Koffron, at-large board member—the FLSS board would like to encourage members who have been active participants in the code-development process to consider running for a seat on the ICC board. We also encourage those who haven’t yet been involved in code work to become involved, become knowledgeable and become a force for change in the future.

The FLSS board has already endorsed the candidacy of Dwayne Garriss, assistant state fire marshal for the State of Georgia, but we feel it’s important to have as many code-experienced fire service candidates as possible for the different seats available.

The ICC elections for officers will be held at the annual business meeting in Charlotte, N.C., in October. All candidates for the board of directors must submit a letter of interest, a current resume and any other information desired to support their candidacy to the chair of the nominating committee (see below) no later than August 27, 2010. If you aren’t ready to run this year, you should start preparing for a run in next year’s election in Phoenix.

Read more about the ICC election process in Guide to Understanding the ICC Board of Directors Election Transition (pdf).

The fire service voice must be heard loud and clear; we’re good partners with the building officials and work hand-in-hand with them on public safety issues, but we must be at the table ourselves to ensure code amendments that could impact firefighter safety have strong advocates on the ICC board.

Letters of interest and other information should be sent to:

International Code Council
Birmingham District Office

Birmingham, AL 35213

HFSC Partners with IAFC to Honor Fire Chief for "Bringing Safety Home"
The nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) and NFPA’s Fire Sprinkler Coalition have teamed up with the IAFC to recognize outstanding local efforts to increase the installation of residential fire-sprinkler systems.

The Bringing Safety Home award, to be presented at our section meeting at Fire-Rescue International on Friday, August 27, was designed to honor a fire chief who uses the HFSC's educational materials and NFPA’s Fire Sprinkler Initiative resources to educate and ensure that decision-makers have information to upgrade or pass new residential fire-sprinkler legislation at the local level.

Note: You must be a member of the IAFC to nominate a fire chief for this award.

Get more information and download the nomination form from the award page. Hurry! Nominations are due by July 23, 2010.
