FCAM - Monthly Meetings

[ARCHIVED] June 15th, SelectWell Firefighter Heart Health Program Presentation

Again, thank you in advance to you and Chief Winn for the opportunity to speak at the FCAM Monthly Meeting next week. Knowing we have limited time for a presentation, and the venue is outside, I thought I would share a quick intro to the SelectWell Firefighter Heart Health Program, a brief 8 min video that explains the significance of our advance Firefighter cardio-metabolic tests, and a pdf version of our brochure. Please forward this email to all of your members.

A few statistics that are specific to firefighters and their heart health and what SelectWell is trying to address –

•             47% of all on-duty firefighter fatalities are due to sudden cardiac deaths (heart attack and strokes)

•             Firefighters, despite being healthier on average than the general public, have 2 to 3 times more heart disease issues than other professionals

•             Standard blood testing consistently misses more than 33% (1/3) of those firefighters at risk for heart disease that can eventually lead to potential sudden cardiac events

•             Advanced cardio-metabolic tests can detect early aspects of Insulin Resistance, increased Blood Clot risks, and Inflammation more common in firefighters eventually found to have evidence of heart disease

SelectWell is focused on impacting and improving the long-term health and wellness of firefighters and we have launched our Firefighter Heart Health Program to address undiagnosed heart disease in firefighters with the goal to prevent unnecessary Sudden Cardiac Events (SCEs). SelectWell is working with Dr. Robert Superko (renowned cardiologist with extensive FEMA-sponsored research on firefighter heart health) to bring advance tests and detection assessments and resources forward to diagnose and manage firefighters at risk and keep them healthy and on the job, allowing for longer careers and extended eventual retirements. We know that heart attacks and strokes can be prevented by deploying advanced lab tests that are ‘early detectors.’ What we do different from NFPA (and other programs) is we offer these FIREFIGHTER SPECIFIC LAB TESTS that are not included in NFPA 1582 along with one-on-one personalized consultations to better understand and appreciate any associated health risks and how to manage and improve overall firefighter heart health; allowing enough time for firefighters to change the trajectory and stay on the job.
